Medications and Supplements
The musculoskeletal system is a complex network of bones, muscles, and joints that work together to provide support, stability, and movement for the body. Disorders and conditions of the musculoskeletal system can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Orthopedic diseases are conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Treatment of orthopedic conditions often involves a combination of medications and supplements. Here are some commonly used medications and supplements that can help reduce
the symptoms, as listed below:
Corticosteroids: These are anti-inflammatory medications that can help reduce inflammation and swelling in the joints. They are often used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or vasculitis, but they also carry a risk of side effects.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): These are over-the-counter pain relievers that help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. They are commonly used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, etc.) and naproxen sodium (Aleve), when taken at recommended doses, usually relieve arthritis pain. Stronger NSAIDs are available by prescription.
NSAIDs can cause stomach discomfort, cardiovascular problems, bleeding issues, and liver or kidney damage. Topical NSAIDs, in gel form applied to the affected joint, have fewer side effects and may relieve pain just as effectively.
Aspirin: Used to relieve mild to moderate pain, reduce fever, and decrease inflammation.
Diclofenac: Used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and treat arthritis.
Celecoxib: Used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and treat arthritis.
Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (DMARDs): These drugs can help slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.
Bromelain: An enzyme found in pineapples that may help reduce joint inflammation and swelling.
Devil’s Claw: An herbal remedy that may help reduce joint pain and inflammation.
Duloxetine (Cymbalta): Commonly used as an antidepressant, it is also approved to treat chronic pain, including osteoarthritis pain.
Antidepressants: These can help relieve depression and pain associated with chronic pain conditions.
Topical Capsaicin: This cream or patch can help relieve pain by blocking pain signals.
Acetaminophen: An over-the-counter pain reliever that can reduce pain and fever, often used for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Excessive use can cause liver damage.
Opioids: Prescription pain relievers that can help reduce severe pain, often used for chronic pain related to musculoskeletal conditions.
Bisphosphonates: These drugs help prevent bone loss and reduce the risk of fractures, commonly used to treat osteoporosis.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): These drugs help prevent bone loss and reduce fracture risk, often used to treat osteoporosis.
Teriparatide: A medication that can increase bone density and reduce fracture risk, commonly used to treat osteoporosis.
Denosumab: A medication that helps prevent bone loss and reduce fracture risk, often used for osteoporosis treatment.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM): A supplement that may help reduce joint pain and inflammation.
SAM-e: A supplement that may help reduce joint pain and inflammation. It may also improve mood and sleep quality.
Calcium and Vitamin D Supplements: These supplements can help improve bone health and prevent osteoporosis.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin Supplements: Often used orally to treat osteoarthritis, these may help reduce pain and improve joint function. Glucosamine and chondroitin can interact with blood thinners like warfarin (Jantoven) and may cause bleeding issues.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Healthy fats found in fish oil that can help reduce inflammation in the body. They may be beneficial in reducing joint pain and stiffness.
Ginger: This spice has anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce muscle and joint pain.
Magnesium: An essential mineral for bone health and muscle function, potentially helpful in reducing muscle cramps and spasms.
Vitamin C: Important for collagen synthesis, which is essential for the health of bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.
Avocado-Soy Unsaponifiables (ASU): A dietary supplement made from a blend of avocado and soy oil, widely used in Europe for treating knee and hip osteoarthritis. Acts as an anti-inflammatory and some studies suggest it may slow or prevent joint damage.
